The Department of Justice sent a letter to state Attorney General Pam Bondi this week, saying that in visits to six nursing homes around the state, investigators identified numerous children who didn’t need to be there and who “would benefit from moving home with their families or other community settings.” View Entire Article

President Bronislaw Komorowski has signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, chiming in with the Paralympic Games in London. The document, which was originally signed by Poland in the wake of the December 2007 UN General Assembly, establishes a series of standards concerning the effective protection of civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights, as well as basic freedoms of people with disabilities. At Misty Cargill’s funeral, the minister called her an advocate for other people with intellectual disabilities. She was — although a reluctant one. Cargill became an advocate when NPR did a story about her fight to get a life-saving kidney transplant. Misty, 30, died in her sleep on Saturday. View Entire Article

When Sawyer Rosenstein was 12, a punch from a bully changed his life forever, leaving him paralyzed, and at times, near death from the complications of his condition.

A Plainfield couple was arrested Tuesday afternoon in response to an incident in September, when a small child wandered off from their residence, town police said. Curtis E. Youngdahl, 40, and his wife, Jennifer L. Youngdahl, 41, of 15 Butternut Lane, were charged with one count each of Risk of Injury to a Child, according to police. On Sept. 15, police responded to a residence on Dow Road for a report of a missing child. An investigation revealed a four-year-old child was found wandering the neighborhood by residents, police said. View Entire Article
